Visual design. How things tell, inform, and seduce our everyday gaze. With Riccardo Falcinelli

On the occasion of the Italian Design Day in 100 locations around the world, 100 “ambassadors” of Italian culture (designers, entrepreneurs, journalists, critics, communicators, teachers...) will illustrate the concept of excellence.

IIC presents an evening with world-famous Italian designer Riccardo Falcinelli.

In the contemporary world design is everywhere: it can be used, lived, enjoyed, manipulated, exploited, wasted, destroyed, recycled; but above all it can be “seen”. And through sight it informs, narrates and seduces us. Riccardo Falcinelli - starting from his book Critica portatile al visual design (Einaudi) - will present a vision of contemporary visual design that surrounds us at all times and in all environments.

Riccardo Falcinelli is one of the most esteemed visual designers in the world of Italian graphic design where he has been responsible for fundamental innovations through original projects for leading publishing houses in Italy. He teaches Psychology of Perception at the faculty of design ISIA in Rome. He is author with Marta Poggi of the graphic novel Cardiaferrania (minimum fax 2000), Grafogrifo (Einaudi Stile Libero 2004) and L’allegra fattoria (minimum fax 2007). In 2011 he published with Stampa Alternativa & Graffiti the volume Guardare. Pensare. Progettare. Neuroscienze per il design.

Design in Italy permeates the fields of culture, art and philosophy to such an extent that it constitutes our society’s innate pattern; its novelty combined with the solidity of the traditional handicrafts and with the unprejudiced experimentation gives origin to Italian designers’ personal style. Besides, thanks to the notion that beauty must characterize products of mass consumption, art and design coexist and flourish much to their mutual benefit.

The pleasure that beautiful ordinary objects can bring into everyday’s life is the intuition of the Italian design school.
