DOCUMENTARY: "BIANCONI, A LOMBARD PIONEER IN IRELAND"

-

DOCUMENTARY:

The evening of Friday 3rd October is dedicated to the projection of a new documentary written and directed by CONCETTO LA MALFA, Editor of Italia Stampa, about Charles Bianconi, the noted historical figure and pioneer of public transport systems in Ireland. Various aspects of the projection will be placed in context by a number of speakers including Phil Prendergast, Mayor of Clonmel, Kathleen Maher, President of the twinning committee of Clonmel-Tregolo and Stephen Ferguson, Vice-Director of An Post.

Charles Bianconi was born in Tregolo, a small outpost in Costa Masnaga in the Province of Lecco, in 1786 and arrived in Dublin at the age of sixteen to learn the trade of selling prints. Having decided not to return to Italy he moved to the small town of Clonmel in county Tipperary. Aware of the difficulties in transporting products and people on Irish roads, Bianconi decided to invest his savings in a comfortable means of transport: a horse-drawn carriage with six places which allowed him to offer a limited service in the area of Clonmel. From this starting point, carriages and horses quickly grew in numbers to become a fleet of 100 carriages, 1,300 horses, and 100 drivers capable of linking up 140 stations around Ireland  for the transport of goods, people and post. Charles Bianconi, considered a national hero, was Mayor of Clonmel for two years in succession.
